Masjid Refurbishment and Solar Installation Project – Ilorin

Location: Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria

Background

Masjids play an important role in bringing communities together for worship, Islamic learning and mutual support. Across Ilorin, local neighbourhood masjids serve as important centres of faith and community life, welcoming worshippers for daily prayers, religious lessons and congregational gatherings.

However, some older masjid buildings require refurbishment and improvements to ensure they remain safe, comfortable and suitable for the needs of their congregations. Ageing facilities and unreliable electricity supplies can make it increasingly difficult to maintain a welcoming environment for worshippers.

Recognising the importance of these places of worship, Ibrahim Trust supported a refurbishment initiative to improve masjid facilities and create a more comfortable and functional environment for the local community.

The Need

A well-maintained masjid requires suitable facilities to accommodate worshippers and support daily religious activities. Inadequate lighting, limited ventilation, unreliable electricity and ageing building facilities can affect the comfort and experience of those attending prayers.

There was a clear need to improve the condition of the masjid buildings, provide reliable electricity and ensure essential facilities were available for worshippers.

The refurbishment would help restore the buildings, improve the prayer environment and ensure the masjids could continue serving their communities effectively for years to come.

Our Contribution

With the generosity of our donors and in partnership with local community members, Ibrahim Trust supported a comprehensive programme of masjid refurbishment and improvements in Ilorin.

The project included several essential upgrades:

  • Solar power installation: Solar panels and battery storage systems were installed to provide a more reliable and sustainable electricity supply.

  • Lighting and ventilation: New lighting and fans were fitted to improve visibility and comfort, particularly during hot weather and evening prayers.

  • Toilet facilities: New toilet facilities were constructed to provide essential amenities for worshippers.

  • Building refurbishment: Existing buildings were repainted, helping to refresh their appearance and improve their overall condition.

  • Windows and doors: New windows and doors were installed to improve ventilation, security and the functionality of the buildings.

  • Prayer area improvements: New carpets were installed, creating a cleaner, more comfortable and welcoming environment for congregational prayers.

Together, these improvements helped address both the structural and practical needs of the masjids.

The Outcome

Alhamdulillah, the refurbishment has transformed the masjid facilities into more comfortable, functional and welcoming places of worship for local communities in Ilorin.

The installation of solar power systems has provided a more dependable electricity supply, helping ensure that lighting, fans and other essential facilities remain available despite interruptions to the local power supply.

Improved ventilation, new carpets and refurbished prayer spaces have enhanced the environment for daily prayers, Islamic lessons and community gatherings. The addition of toilet facilities has also provided worshippers with essential amenities.

Beyond the physical improvements, this project represents an investment in the heart of the community. The masjids can continue to serve as places of worship, learning and connection, supporting generations of worshippers who gather within their walls.

Every prayer performed, every lesson delivered and every act of worship supported by these improvements has the potential to bring lasting benefit to the community.

We are sincerely grateful to our donors whose generosity and the cooperation of local residents helped make this project possible. May Allah reward them abundantly and make every prayer, act of worship and moment of beneficial learning within these masjids a source of ongoing reward and Sadaqah Jariyah for them. Ameen.
