Masjid Borehole Water Project – Missira Village

Location: Missira Village, The Gambia

Background

The masjid in Missira Village is at the heart of community life, serving as an important centre for daily worship, Qur’anic education and community gatherings. Residents from Missira and neighbouring villages regularly come together for the five daily prayers, Jumu’ah, Ramadan and Eid.

As the community grew, so did the number of worshippers attending the masjid. With hundreds of people gathering regularly, the need for a reliable and accessible water supply became increasingly important, particularly for performing wudu (ablution) before prayer.

Without a dependable source of water nearby, preparing for prayer could be challenging, especially during busy periods and larger congregational gatherings.

The Need

Access to clean and reliable water is essential for maintaining the daily activities of a masjid. Worshippers require a consistent supply of water to perform wudu before prayer, while the growing congregation placed additional pressure on existing water sources.

There was a clear need for a sustainable water solution that could meet the ablution requirements of the masjid and support the wider community.

A dedicated borehole would provide a dependable underground water supply, ensuring worshippers and local residents could access water more easily throughout the year.

Our Contribution

With the generosity of our donors, Ibrahim Trust supported the construction of a new borehole within the grounds of the masjid in Missira Village.

The project involved identifying a suitable location and drilling into the ground to access an underground water supply. The borehole was designed to provide a reliable source of water to meet the needs of the growing congregation and surrounding community.

The Outcome

Alhamdulillah, the borehole was successfully completed in August 2025 and now provides an accessible and dependable water source for approximately 2,000 people from Missira Village and neighbouring communities.

Worshippers can now access water more conveniently to perform wudu before daily prayers, Jumu’ah and larger congregational gatherings. This has helped improve the masjid’s facilities and made it easier for the growing congregation to participate in daily worship.

Beyond its benefits for the masjid, the borehole also provides an important resource for residents of surrounding villages, helping improve access to an essential everyday necessity.

More than simply providing water, this project represents an investment in worship, community wellbeing and a sustainable resource that will continue to benefit generations to come.

We are sincerely grateful to our donors whose generosity helped make this project possible. May Allah reward them abundantly and make every drop of water used for wudu, every prayer performed and every act of worship supported by this borehole a source of ongoing benefit and Sadaqah Jariyah for them. Ameen.
